Before AI Comes Data: Why Standards are the Real Foundation of Generative AI

Everywhere you look, someone is talking about artificial intelligence (AI).
New AI tools are emerging almost daily, promising to transform how we work, improve productivity and redefine the customer experience. In insurance, we’re already seeing AI help summarize claims, support underwriting, streamline customer service and assist brokers with routine tasks.
The excitement is well deserved. AI has enormous potential to improve the way our industry serves Canadians.
But as our industry embraces AI, I believe we’re overlooking something even more important.
Before there is artificial intelligence, there must first be intelligent data. Generative AI doesn’t create knowledge on its own. It learns from the information we provide.
The quality of its insights, recommendations and decisions depends entirely on the quality, consistency and reliability of the data behind it.
In other words, AI is only as smart as the data it receives.
That’s why conversations about AI should also be conversations about data standards.
Standards may not generate headlines, but they create the foundation that allows innovation to happen. They establish a common language that enables insurers, brokers and technology providers to exchange information consistently and accurately. When data is standardized, systems can communicate more effectively, information becomes more reliable, and emerging technologies like AI can deliver better results.
Without that foundation, AI has to work harder to interpret inconsistent information, increasing complexity and reducing confidence in the outcomes it produces.
For our industry, that matters.
Insurance is built on information. Every quote, policy change, renewal and claim depends on data moving between organizations, technology platforms and business systems. If that information isn’t accurate or isn’t understood the same way by everyone involved, it creates friction that affects both businesses and the customers they serve.
When the underlying data is trusted and standardized, however, the opportunities become significant. Brokers can spend less time correcting or re-entering information and more time advising clients. Insurers can automate routine processes with greater confidence. Technology partners can develop new solutions more quickly because they’re building on a common foundation rather than navigating dozens of different approaches.
Most importantly, customers benefit.
The average Canadian isn’t thinking about data standards when they purchase insurance. They’re thinking about protecting their home, their vehicle, their business or the people they care about most.
They expect accurate information, timely service and an experience that feels simple and connected.
Whether they’re requesting a quote, making a policy change or submitting a claim, they don’t see the technology working behind the scenes. Nor should they.
When digital standards are working well, they’re virtually invisible. Information flows seamlessly. Systems communicate effectively. Transactions happen faster. Customers simply experience insurance that works the way they expect it to.
That invisible foundation becomes even more important as AI becomes part of everyday insurance operations.
Organizations that will realize the greatest value from AI won’t necessarily be those that adopt it first. They’ll be the ones that have invested in trusted, well-governed, standardized data that AI can understand and use with confidence.
This is an important moment for our industry.
For decades, insurers, brokers and technology providers have worked together to establish common standards that improve how information is exchanged across the insurance ecosystem. Those efforts have delivered measurable gains in efficiency, accuracy and interoperability. Today, they also represent something much bigger: the foundation upon which the next generation of innovation will be built.
AI isn’t replacing the importance of standards. It’s reinforcing it.
While we should continue exploring the incredible opportunities AI presents, we must also remember that innovation doesn’t begin with algorithms. It begins with trusted data. And trusted data begins with industry standards.
